Olympic Love Games

The Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia have been one of the most talked about topics on social media in February. Many athletes have utilized Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms to keep in touch with their fans in America and abroad. One such athlete is Nick Goepper, an Olympic freeskier for the United States.

Goepper has been an avid user of Twitter and Instagram since 2011, and he began posting about the Olympics as soon as he qualified to represent the U.S. He tweeted and Instagrammed daily, keeping fans up-to-date about his stay in Sochi as well as how he performed in the freeski.

Goepper has used his newfound fame in a different way than many of his fellow Olympians; he is using social media to find a date for when he gets home from Russia. Goepper first posted about being alone on Valentine’s Day, sparking an idea for a competition among followers. The competition requires followers to make a creative date invitation, and “one lucky girl” will get a dream date with Nick Goepper. Goepper created #iwanttodatenick to track his Twitter and Instagram responses.

Upon searching this hashtag on Twitter and Instagram, you can find many of the creative invitations, proving that Goepper has created a social media sensation. Goepper now has thousands of American ladies competing for his affection. This is a great example of how celebrities can use social media create a sensation. We will all be eager to see who Goepper chooses to be the lucky lady to go on a date.
