  1. The Olympics would be just as popular without social media. What you have to remember is SM adds a secondary level to the experience and facilitates the event. Without SM, the Olympics would still be successful, but wouldn’t be as convenient to stay up-to-date with them. Thoughts?

  2. I agree. I think that the Olympics have always been well recognized with or without the use of social media. When I say “spread awareness” I almost just mean as a reminder of when the Olympics start but I also think that in some cases social media could attract people who may have not payed a lot of attention to the Olympics. When I say “create fans” I mean more fans because there is no question that there would be a large number of fans even without social media. Advertising through social media may help some but it definitely wouldn’t make or break the Olympics. I do think that social media is a big part of the Olympics but a better way of wording it would be that it is “a secondary level to the experience”.
